Video – CNY Fertility Injection Lessons: Gonal f

Hi, I’m Lisa Stack, the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator and today Michelle is going to guide us on the injection of Gonal f.

Michelle:  I’m going to demonstrate on how to administer Gonal f.  Gonal f comes in 900 pens, IU pens, or 300 IU pens.  Inside your Gonal f pack, you will have your pen that needs to be refrigerated at all times, and it will also have your needles to administer.  What you’re going to do is you’re going to take one of your needles, and here’s your pen, you will take your cap off.  With your alcohol wipe, you will wipe the top off your Gonal f pen.  Then you will twist on your needle.  Inside this needle, once you have taken the top off, you will see part of your needle, and you’ll twist it on, and now you’re ready to do your dosing.  Your dosing will be decided by your visits to the office every other day to decide what your levels should be at in order to make your follicles, which will make your eggs.  So, let’s start at say 225 units and what you’re going to do is, you have a very large black arrow.  You will twist the white portion until it equals 225 units.  Once your black arrow is lined up to your 225 units, you will then pull out the end of your pen.  At the end of your pen, you will actually see a little arrow that states 225 units.  Once you have pulled out your dose, you will not be able to change that dose, that is the dose that you will have to give with this pen.  Once you’re ready to give the injection, what you do is it is double-capped and you’re ready to give your injection.  Your injection will be given anywhere from hip to hip, anywhere below your belly button.  You will wipe your area with alcohol.  Make sure your alcohol is 100 percent dry or else your injection will sting.  You will pinch your skin; you will inject your needle straight in.  In order to administer the medication, you need to actually push the part that you pulled out, so you’ll push the medication.  As I’m pushing the medication, you’re going to hear a bunch of clicks, 3 or 4 clicks you’ll hear.  Once the clicks are over, you need to keep the needle in for 2 or 3 seconds longer in order for you to get all of the 225 units.  So, I’ll do that again.  I’m going to twist at 225, and I’m going to pull out.  Now, if you listen for the clicks, you’ll be able to hear how many and if you can see the fluid, watch how many after the clicks.  Once you keep it in for 2 or 3 seconds, you let go of your skin and pull straight out, and that’s how Gonal f is administered.
