Video – CNY Fertility Injection Lessons: Lupron

Hi, I’m Lisa Stack, the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator and Wendy is going to teach us how to administer a Lupron injection.

Wendy:  Hi.  The first thing I want to tell you is why we use the Lupron.  We use the Lupron to suppress your hormonal system and to prevent you from ovulating until we want you to.  That’s how we control the cycle.  There are two doses in Lupron, depending upon your cycle:  one is 5 units and one is 10, and I will explain that right now.  What you’re going to do with your Lupron, is you’re going to flip the cap off and you’re going to take your alcohol, and you are going to clean off the top of your vial.  You are going to open up your syringe.  Take your cap off.  This is what your needle looks like.  You’re going to stick your needle in the top of your Lupron, turn your Lupron upside down, and you can see that your needle is touching the fluid.  The two dosings are 5 units, which you pull back your plunger to the first number you see which is the 5.  This is what it looks like when it’s full and the 5 is here on the syringe.  If you need to pull back to the 10, you pull back your plunger to the next number you see which is the 10.  That is what it looks like when it’s filled.  Where you give your injections are between your hip bones, below your belly button, and above your pelvic area.  You choose a spot, you take your alcohol prep, you clean off the spot, you grip the spot, and you take your needle, go directly in, and plunge your medication, release your grip and pull out.  That is how you administer Lupron.
