Egg Donation: The Reward Goes Beyond the Compensation

According to The American Fertility Association, “one out of eight couples in the U.S. is infertile”. For these couples that are facing infertility, there can be many emotional challenges. Egg donation offers hope to infertile couples and single women who would otherwise have little or no chance of achieving a pregnancy. Participating in the egg donation program can be a very fulfilling experience that has been referred to by our CNY Fertility clients as “woman helping woman”. This contribution is truly a “gift of life.”

There are three main steps to donating eggs: applicant screening, treatment cycle, and compensation of $4,000.

While no identifying information about the donor is revealed, detailed personal, medical and family profiles are provided to recipients in the process of selecting a donor. Our donors are committed to the concept of anonymity and would not be interested in participating in the program in any other way. In most cases, anonymity best protects the privacy and interests of both the donor and the recipient.

Diane (not her real name), an egg donor at CNY Fertility Center, has written of her experiences from start to finish in the donation process. Diane explains the process, in her own words on her blog here. In fact, Diane’s story was so detailed and inspiring; it was recently shared in the 2012 Adoption and Fertility Directory that is published by The American Fertility Association.

While the egg retrieval procedure marks the end of the donor’s active commitment to the program for that specific cycle, we ask that the donor stay in touch with our office for the rare occasion that we need to contact them. The donor’s participation in this program is a generous gesture that is greatly appreciated. Diane referred to the process as participating in “the miracle of birth”.

Lisa: Hi, Dr. Kiltz! How are you?
Dr. Rob: Spectacular! Another awesome and amazing day in the universe. Every day, I say those words.
Lisa: It really helps. I believe it does.
Dr. Rob: We are so blessed. Here at CNY Fertility & CNY healing Arts, Lisa is really helping bring support together for everyone, no matter where you’re from. Often, we’re seeing clients from all over the world.
Lisa: Absolutely! Traveling thousands and thousands and thousands of miles just to reach us.
Dr. Rob: We say “out of town” but I want to change the words because they’re “travel clients”. It’s the words and the connections that are so important. We’re here to help anyone from any place.
Lisa: Anywhere! We have clients contacting us all the time. I have clients asking me all the time, “Is it possible to come to your center or to be treated at home?” We really have so many ways to work around the traveling and the distance to make it feel like that you aren’t far away at all.
Dr. Rob: Now with the internet and Face Time and Google, and whatever, it’s so simple to connect with people. I’m talking to people on my iPhone every day. Sometimes, it’s only a few minutes of words support and guidance. Sometimes they get pregnant without even showing up.
Lisa: It’s really wonderful. It’s a really seamless process, essentially. We are able to schedule a great phone consult with either you or one of our providers where it’s just like you’re sitting in the room here. You get the same exact care that you would here. We’re able to provide you with dedicated nurses that just work with our traveling clients. That’s just what they do all day long, and they love it. We’re able to do a lot of our treatment remotely, and then bring you in when we need to.
Dr. Rob: Dedicated support and that’s really important. We’re here to help no matter where you’re coming from. Everything is possible!
Lisa: If you ever are questioning if you can make the travel arrangements or how the timing will work out, please contact us. We’ve coordinated more cycles than you can imagine with out of town clients and they’ve all worked wonderfully.
Dr. Rob: Absolutely. We have the help and the guidance. Please don’t hesitate to call and ask.

Hi! My name is Lisa Stack, and I’m the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator. I wanted to let you know that this month I’m going to be having an Interactive Recipient Support Webinar. The webinar will be on Thursday, February 16th from about 6-7 (or 7:30pm). You can access the webinar login information on our calendar. Now, this webinar is open to everyone, and the purpose of it is to really get into the emotions and the challenges of the donor process.

So, if you’re a recipient and you’re thinking about selecting a donor, even if you’re just toying with the idea of a donor cycle—you’re loaded with all these different thoughts and questions, and challenges that many of those around you may not have any experience with. While we can’t get everyone into the same room for a support group, I have tried to recreate a support group environment as much as possible on this webinar. So feel free to send me any questions that you may have beforehand. This is a great opportunity for your emotionally-based questions; any technical questions I’ll refer to our donor staff. This is a great time to talk about the challenges of selecting a donor, maybe approaching your friends or family members with the potential idea of pursuing a donor cycle, any challenges or reservations that you may have with using donor eggs, or donor sperm. This is a great opportunity for you to ask questions and just listen in even if you’re not really prepared with questions, that’s fine too!

So, come on and join us February 16th. It’s going to be a great evening and I’d love to offer you any support that I can.

Hi! My name is Lisa Stack, and I’m the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator. I wanted to let you know that Monday, February 13th, we’re going to have a great CNY Fertility Circle of Hope support group session in Syracuse. We’re going to have Dr. Greene joining us.

Dr. Greene is one of our new physicians in the Syracuse office. You may have encountered him through a consult or some of your appointments, but I imagine that you’ll be seeing him a lot more around the office as you become more accustomed to coming in, and as you just move further into different procedures in your cycle. Dr. Greene is a really great asset, and we’re so lucky to have him. He has a wonderful wealth of knowledge. He has a great new approach and a way of looking at things. He has also written many books. His focus is mainly on balancing our hormones; especially how can we do it naturally and on our own. I think this is something that’s really pertinent and important to everyone that is trying to conceive.

I welcome you to come to our Circle of Hope support group. We’re going to just be meeting him and really just spending some time to get an idea how he views our importance while trying to conceive and hormones, and trying to work through these challenges naturally, and getting some great suggestions and benefit ideas from him. I would like you to just come with your questions and we’re also going to have a general good sharing as well; it’s going to be a really great session. Especially, if you’ve been wanting to get some one-on-one time with a physician or get some ideas for your cycle to try to change things up a bit in regards to your diet, vitamin, or hormone therapy—this is a great session for you to attend. We’ll also have a great dinner, and lots of fun laughs, even if there are a few tears there, that’s OK, I think that’s always healthy.

I always recommend that partners come to at least one session if it’s at all possible. Words of Support and Encouragement Week of January 30, 2012

Good morning! I hope that you had a great weekend. Did you do anything special for yourself this weekend? Did you set aside time just for yourself, or your family? Learning to say ‘No’ is very important both while you are coping with infertility, and starting (or expanding!) your family. If you are starting to feel like your weekends are just an extension of your week – filled with engagements and running around – than maybe it is time to start saying ‘no’ more often. At first it can be very challenging to turn down invitations, especially with those that you love. However, the happier and healthier that you are, the more loving and engaged you will ultimately be with those that you love. It is OK to say no, and take a quiet afternoon to regroup.
Do you find it challenging to take time for yourself? Are you able to say ‘no’ when needed?

This week, try to carve out sometime for yourself (alone, or as a couple). See how refreshing it can feel, and how much more excited you are to see those that you love when you are well rested.

Video: Fertility Treatments-Making Small Lifestyle Changes During Your Cycle

Hi! My name is Lisa Stack, and I’m the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator. I wanted to upload a quick video, in addition to my Words of Support and Encouragement article this week, talking about changing your cycle a little bit. So many of our clients often feel like they have been repeating the same cycle over and over again, especially if they had multiple, negative test results. It’s normal to feel that way and get frustrated if you’ve been doing the same medications, the same procedures, and what not.

What I suggest you do is to add something different. If you feel like you’ve been doing the same medications, you’ve been eating the same foods, you’ve been trying everything the same; to get a little control back and to give you something to really focus on and something to be really encouraged about, I suggest that you make a good promise to yourself that you’ll start right at the beginning of your cycle. I want you to keep it easy as well – don’t shoot for the moon. I don’t want you to say I’ll do yoga every day of the week and then if you start slacking on it a little bit, you’ll get disappointed and discouraged, so pick something attainable. Maybe get to Yoga for Fertility once a week, or try a yoga practice at home on your own every Saturday or Sunday, once a week. Maybe go for a brisk 15-minute walk outdoors, even during the winter, it feels fantastic once you get doing it 2-3 times a week. Pledge to cook a really good home-cooked meal with good, natural, organic foods once per week with your partner. These are all great changes that you can make on your own. They can be very cheap; a lot of them don’t have to cost anything.

What you’re doing is supplementing your fertility and your overall health beyond what we’re doing in the office. You’re taking some of that control back into your own hands. Whenever you start to feel down or worried about I’m just doing the same cycle over and over again. How is this going to be a positive outcome if we keep repeating this? You can rest assure and remember that you are doing something different. This is a different cycle and you aren’t repeating everything. I’d also like you to keep in mind that every cycle you use new eggs. Every cycle you use new sperm. Every cycle you have a new uterine lining, your hormones are starting out at different levels. Even though it may feel like it’s just the same body; what we’re using in the integral parts, change and regenerate every single month. So you really aren’t walking into the same cycle over and over again. If you need some help coming up with some new ideas to change things up a little bit and to really support your cycle, shoot me an email and I have tons of ideas for you so you can get a good cycle plan started for you!
