Male Fertility Diet

Fat is where it's at 80% Fat 20% Protein

Fat is where it's at

While we recommend men take supplementary fish oil because most are not getting enough fat in their diet . . . you really don’t need it if you’re eating a “ketogenic,” diet.

Male Fertility Diet

Based on decades of clinical experience, we believe that the food we eat impacts fertility perhaps more than anything.  We recommend that all men (and women) eat a high-fat, moderate protein, and low-carbohydrate diet (aka the ketogenic diet). That means lots of fatty meat like ribeyes, pork belly, chicken wings, lamb shoulder, etc, along with butter, heavy cream, tallow, and other high-quality fats.

The Ketogenic diet improves male fertility via two primary mechanisms:

  • Reduces Inflammation: A high-fat, low-carb diet reduces inflammation by decreasing the inflammatory plant molecules (phytochemicals + associated bacterial load) consumed in a standard American diet (SAD), eliminating the chronic hyperglycemic state associated with the SAD (which causes inflammatory advanced glycation end products and impaired hormone functioning), and providing the body with large doses of anti-inflammatory fats. Inflammation not only reduces the ability to deliver nutrients to important tissue, including the male reproductive organs, but it also significantly impairs the body’s ability to repair and regenerate. Because sperm is always being produced, restrictions in blood flow and the inability to repair damaged tissue can reduce the quantity and quality of sperm.
  • Improves hormone functioning: Many critical fertility hormones are made from cholesterol, but because cholesterol is also imperative for brain function and repair (aka survival), it’s almost impossible to maintain a healthy hormone balance if you’re not eating enough.

Important Male Fertility Dietary Support

Over the Counter Supplementation

Food is the foundation of a healthy male reproductive system, but dietary supplements can help fill in nutrient gaps and provide other nutrients that support the normal sperm count, motility, structure, and function.  Below you will find a list of our recommended and CNY-developed fertility supplements to support healthy sperm structure and function.

Pharmacological Assistance

Prescription Medications

There are many instances where prescription medications can help male fertility. Below are some common male fertility medications that can be discussed with your doctor.

  • Low Dose Naltrexone

LDN acts as an immunomodulator, increasing the body’s ability to heal.  Through unknown mechanisms, it can improve sperm and male fertility.

  • Clomid

Clomid for men is used when a low sperm count is caused by low testosterone levels. Clomid increases the production of FSH (increasing sperm production) and LH (testosterone production) leading to better sperm production and function.

  • HGH

Human Growth Hormone plays an important physiological role, exerting autocrine and paracrine control over spermatogenesis. In other words, it can help improve sperm production and function.

  • hCG

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is used in men to increase the production of testosterone and increase sperm production.  Men with low sperm counts and low motility may benefit from daily HCG injections.

Other Considerations

Lifestyle

  • Exercise

Ditch high intensity exercises in favor of brisk walking and yoga. High intensity exercise increases inflammation and micro testicular trauma.

  • Environmental Factors

Saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and other excessive heat to the testicles can kill and damage sperm and their production.  Similarly, toxic exposure, drinking, and smoking can drastically harm sperm.

  • Mindset

Stress can have a significant impact on all areas of our health and wellness. Fertility is no different. Developing relaxation techniques and medication could help.

Holistic Therapies

  • Massage

Specific fertility messages like the Maya Abdominal Massage can improve a man’s sperm by improving blood flow and nutrient delivery to a man’s reproductive organs.

  • Acupuncture

Acupuncture is another fantastic therapy to supplement a man’s treatment that can help restore hormonal balance, reduce stress, and improve blood flow and sperm quality.
