The Cost of IVF in New York: Breaking Down the Prices

The cost of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in New York varies significantly, with prices ranging from $5,769 (at CNY Fertility) to over $30,000, with an average cost of $24,000 per cycle. These prices vary depending on the clinic, medications, add-on services, and more.

In this article, we will break down the key components of IVF costs in New York and provide resources to help make your IVF journey more affordable.

What Contributes to the Cost of IVF in New York?

You may see IVF advertised for as low as $3,999 in New York or receive a bill for over $30,000. What gives?

One reason these costs vary so widely is that clinics have no standardized “basic” IVF package. However, the main reason is that some clinics charge significantly more for the same services you would get at a less expensive clinic.

Additionally, fertility clinics include more or fewer services in their advertised prices, which means that the actual cost at one clinic may be significantly higher or lower than at another, even if their initial quotes seem comparable.

With all this in mind, it is crucial to carefully review each clinic’s pricing to understand the true cost of treatment. Below are the required components to consider when calculating and comparing IVF costs in New York:

  • Anesthesia: Used during egg retrieval to ensure patient comfort.
  • Embryo Transfer: Transferring either fresh or frozen embryos into the uterus. Fresh transfers are included in costs, while frozen transfers can incur a significant additional fee (see below).
  • Medications: Though not technically needed to do IVF, medications are used in over 99% of IVF cycles and account for one of the largest costs associated with IVF treatment. While typically not quoted by clinics, many negotiate special rates with pharmacies to save patients money. Most clients can expect to pay between $2,000-$7,000 in medication costs per cycle.

Additional Costs Not Included in Base IVF Price

Beyond the costs for services listed above, for most patients, additional services will increase the base price by $5,00- $15,000 per cycle.

Additional expenses may include:

  • IVF Medications: As mentioned above, medications are not usually included in quoted prices, yet used in nearly all IVF cycle. The average cost for standard IVF medications ranges from $2,000–$7,000 per cycle, depending on dosage and whether you pay out-of-pocket or through insurance. Some patients have successfully sourced medications from international pharmacies for significantly lower prices, without safety concerns.
  • Cryopreservation. Valuable for many IVF patients because egg retrieval usually results in several mature eggs. These eggs are fertilized and cultured into embryos in the lab. After a few days, there may be multiple viable embryos ready for transfer. Since most patients choose to transfer one embryo at a time, any extra healthy embryos are typically frozen for potential future use. Some clinics may include the cost of cryopreservation and storage in their base IVF package, but it’s often an additional $600 for the first year, with a recurring annual storage fee.
  • Frozen Embryo Transfers (FET): The average cost of an FET in New York is around $4,000, but CNY Fertility offers FETs for as low as $995. FETs are often necessary for patients with multiple embryos or those who cannot proceed with a fresh transfer immediately.
  • Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT): PGT screens embryos for genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities before transfer. This testing costs between $4,500 and $7,000, including biopsy fees and testing by the genetics lab. Since PGT requires embryos to be frozen, this incurs additional cryopreservation and FET costs.

Cost of Multiple Cycles

Most IVF patients do not succeed on their first cycle and often need two or more cycles. On average, patients go through 2.3–2.7 cycles. In New York, this brings total costs to an average range of $13,000–$60,000.

IVF Costs at CNY Fertility

At our three New York locations, an IVF cycle, including medications, can be done with our most popular IVF package for $5,769.

  • Egg retrieval with anesthesia
  • ICSI fertilization
  • Embryo culture and development
  • Fresh embryo transfer
  • Cryopreservation of remaining embryos
  • Medications (CNY’s most common stimulation protocol)

Note that this price includes some things that may be added costs at other clinics (ie. ICSI, Assisted Hatching, Anesthesia), but doesn’t include everything required for a full IVF cycle. Fortunately, we at CNY Fertility are transparent about these exclusions, and there are reasons for them.

Required Add-On Services

  • Monitoring: For local patients, monitoring costs an additional $995. This fee is often omitted from the base price as many insurance policies cover it. Additionally, many CNY patients travel from out of state or abroad and prefer to do their monitoring locally, allowing them to limit their time at our locations to just a few days.

For traveling patients, CNY requires:

  • Remote Cycle Management: $150
  • Local Monitoring Fees: Patients must pay for required ultrasounds and bloodwork at their local facility, typically around $1,500.
  • Medications: Although not technically required to perform IVF, medications are used in over 99% of IVF cycles because they significantly improve success rates. CNY Fertility offers medication bundles for cost savings:
  • Low Stim/Mini IVF Bundle: $5,769
  • Standard Stim IVF Bundle: $6,269
  • High Stim IVF Bundle: $6,389

While medications can be purchased outside of these bundles, most self-pay patients opt for the bundled options due to the substantial savings.

Additional travel expenses usually include driving or flying to the closest CNY Fertility location and hotel accommodation for 2-7 nights.

Does Insurance Cover IVF in New York?

New York has a state mandate that requires large-group insurance plans (covering 100 or more employees) to provide coverage for infertility treatments, including up to three IVF cycles. This mandate is part of the New York State Infertility Demonstration Program and aims to help reduce the financial burden of fertility treatments.

However, law does not require small-group plans and individual insurance plans to cover IVF. Therefore, coverage can vary greatly depending on the size of your employer and the type of health plan they offer.

Even if your insurance falls within the state mandate, there are numerous exclusions and limits, including:

  • Age Restrictions: Coverage may be limited based on the woman’s age.
  • Medication Exclusions: IVF medications might not be fully covered.
  • High Deductibles and Co-pays: Significant out-of-pocket costs may still apply.
  • Lifetime Caps: Some plans limit the number of IVF cycles or total costs covered.
  • Pre-existing Condition Restrictions: Coverage might exclude certain conditions.

IVF Financing and Grants

Many clinics in New York, including CNY Albany and Syracuse, offer financing options to make IVF more affordable. Some provide in-house financing, while others work with third-party lenders. Additionally, there are several independent lenders that specialize in fertility loans, and personal loans from credit unions can also be viable options.

IVF grants can significantly reduce the cost of treatment, with some even providing free IVF cycles. Many grants are available nationwide, and some are specifically for New York residents. The CNY IVF Grant, is open to all applicants.

IVF Cost in New York: The Takeaway

IVF in New York can range from $5,769 to over $30,000 per cycle, including medications, depending on the clinic and services included. Since most patients require multiple cycles, the total costs to bring home a baby can vary from around $13,000 to $60,000. Additional expenses for medications, FETs, and genetic testing are common.

The best way to make the cost of IVF affordable is to make direct comparisons between the services offered and the prices of those same services between fertility clinics. For most people, low-cost, high-quality options like CNY Fertility will be a no-brainer.
