The Cost of IVF in Virginia: What to Expect

In Virginia, the cost of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) can vary significantly, with prices ranging from $5,769 (at CNY Fertility) to over $30,000 at many other clinics. On average, one cycle of IVF in Virginia costs around $24,000.

These expenses can fluctuate depending on factors such as the fertility clinic, medications, and any additional services required.

This article outlines the main components of IVF costs in Virginia and provides strategies for making the process more affordable.

Factors Affecting the Cost of IVF in Virginia

IVF treatments in Virginia may be advertised for as low as $5,769, but some clinics can charge over $30,000.

This large price range is primarily due to the fact that different clinics charge significantly different rates for the same services.

Additionally, the total cost of your IVF journey will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Add-on services like genetic testing (PGT), frozen embryo transfers (FET), and multiple cycles can substantially increase the final cost.

Before diving into the additional service costs, let’s break down the basic components you’ll need to consider when calculating the cost of IVF.

The main factors that typically account for the cost of IVF in Virginia include:

  • Monitoring Appointments Track the development of eggs and help schedule the retrieval procedure. Track the development of the uterine lining to determine the right time to do the embryo transfer.
  • Egg Retrieval: A thin needle, guided by ultrasound, is used to retrieve mature eggs from the woman’s ovaries.
  • Anesthesia: Used during egg retrieval to ensure comfort during this minor surgical procedure.
  • Embryo Transfer: Although many clinics include fresh embryo transfers in their standard IVF packages, frozen transfers usually incur additional fees due to the expenses involved in freezing, storing, and preparing the embryo for implantation. The decision between fresh and frozen transfers depends on various factors, such as the patient’s health and the overall treatment plan.
  • Medications: Medications are a critical component of most IVF cycles, though they are not always included in the quoted cost by clinics. Patients should plan to spend between $2,000 and $7,000 per cycle on these medications, which play a key role in stimulating egg production and supporting the IVF process.

IVF Costs at CNY Fertility, Norfolk

Coming November of 2024, our CNY Norfolk location will offer single IVF cycles, including medications, for as low as $5,769.

This popular package includes:

  • Embryo culture and development
  • Cryopreservation of remaining embryos to be used in future transfers if the first cycle fails, or if clients want to grow their families in the future.
  • Medications (CNY’s most common stimulation protocol)

This price and package includes components that may not be included at other clinics (ICSI, Assisted Hatching, Anesthesia), but does not include everything required for a full IVF cycle. We are transparent about our reasons for this.

Required add-On services at CNY: For local patients, monitoring costs an additional $995.

We don’t include this fee in our base price because many insurance policies cover it. Additionally, many CNY patients travel from out of state or abroad and prefer to do their monitoring with their local providers, allowing them to spend just a few days at our locations.

Costs for CNY travel patients: For patients traveling to CNY there are a few other costs to consider:

  • Remote cycle management: $150
  • Local monitoring fees: Patients will have to pay for required ultrasounds and bloodwork at their local facility, typically around $1,500.
  • Additional travel expenses: The cost of driving or flying to CNY Colorado Springs, and hotel accommodation for 2-7 nights.

It is reflective of self-pay pricing, includes highly variable estimates paid to CNY and third parties, and national averages obtained through internal research, FertilityIQ, ASRM, and Resolve. Billing through insurance will likely result in substantially different fees. CNY Fertility does not warrant or guarantee any price for services conducted or rendered by a third party and recommends everyone obtain written estimates from any medical facility involved in your treatment as well as verification of coverage from your insurance company prior to beginning treatment.

Additional Costs Beyond Basic IVF Services

Beyond standard IVF services, many patients will require or opt for additional treatments, which can raise the overall cost of an IVF cycle.

At CNY, we provide these add-on services at a significantly lower cost compared to the average prices in Virginia and across the country.

  • IVF Medications: Though CNY includes the cost of medications in our packages, most clinics do no. Medications are used in over 99% of IVF cycles and account for one of the largest costs associated with IVF treatment. Most clients can expect to pay between $2,000-$7,000 in medication costs per cycle. Larger clinics like CNY negotiate special rates with pharmacies and pass the savings along to their patients.
  • Cryopreservation and Storage: Egg or embryo freezing and first-year storage usually cost an extra $600, with an annual storage fee after that.
  • Frozen Embryo Transfers (FET): The average cost of an FET in Colorado is around $4,000, but CNY Fertility offers FETs for as low as $995. FETs are often necessary for patients with multiple embryos or those who cannot proceed with a fresh transfer immediately.
  • Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT): PGT screens embryos for genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities before transfer. This testing costs between $4,500 and $7,000, including biopsy fees and testing by the genetics lab. Since PGT requires embryos to be frozen, this incurs additional cryopreservation and FET costs.
  • Donor Eggs: Using donor eggs can significantly raise the overall cost of IVF treatment, with expenses ranging from $30,000 to $60,000 or more
  • Donor Sperm: Whether due to male infertility, single parenthood, or same-sex couples looking to start a family, using donor sperm in IVF offers a viable path to parenthood.
  • Gestational surrogacy: Surrogacy adds substantial costs to fertility treatments. In Colorado, surrogacy expenses can range from $60,000 to $130,000

Cost of Multiple IVF Cycles

Successfully achieving a healthy pregnancy through IVF often takes more than one cycle. According to data from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), only about 26% of patients are successful on their first attempt. For the remaining 74%, it generally takes two to three cycles to achieve a successful pregnancy and live birth.

This means that your overall costs will likely double.

Does Insurance Cover IVF in Virginia?

Currently, Virginia does not have a state mandate that requires insurance companies to cover infertility treatments, including IVF.

Whether or not IVF is covered will depend on your employer’s health insurance plan or if you have purchased a plan that includes fertility treatment benefits.

Some insurance plans may cover diagnostic testing, medications, or other related procedures, while others may not cover any part of the IVF process. It’s important to check with your insurance provider and review the details of your plan to see if IVF or other fertility treatments are covered and to what extent. You might also want to look into fertility financing options or clinics that offer bundled or discounted packages to help manage costs.

Additionally, Virginia does have a law that requires insurers to cover certain fertility preservation services (such as egg or sperm freezing) for individuals undergoing medical treatments, like chemotherapy, that may affect their future fertility.

Financing and Grants

Many fertility clinics in Virginia offer financing options, either through in-house plans or third-party lenders. Additionally, grants are available to help make IVF more affordable, such as the CNY IVF Grant, which provides financial assistance to eligible patients.

The Cost of IVF in Colorado: The Takeaway

The cost of IVF in Virginia ranges from $5,769 at CNY to over $30,000 per cycle at other clinics, depending on the services provided.

Since many patients need more than one cycle, the total cost could range from $13,000 to $60,000. It’s important to compare prices and services across different clinics to ensure you get the best value for your IVF treatment.
